This step is in the paragraph entitled "First step : Clean out your old X" SO if you don't have X installed, just pass over this step and go to the next "Second step: Installing modular X"
ANyway, for the explaination of what goes wrong: this script is meant to look for files in the /usr/X11R6 directory and find which ebuild they belong to, then make a list of those ebuilds for you to re-emerge them when you're done installing Xorg 7. Since you don't have any xserver installed, there is nothing in this dir, thus the script does nothing. everything is fine.
Edit : the howto porting to modular X11 is intended for developpers who have to make ebuilds compliant with the new modular Xorg ebuilds.

Well, it worked for me. If you do not have X installed then you obviously do not need to uninstall it and you can start with Second Step: Installing Modular X.
If it still wants to install monolithic X then you haven't unmasked modular X. |

If /etc/portage/package.unmask doesn't exist, just create it and copy/paste the list of packages in it |

chaosteam2000,
Gentoo runs two different package sets loosely called stable and testing.
By defualt, you get the stable packages, which include xorg-x11 6.8. This is the monolithic xorg.
xorg-x11 7.0 is in testing at the moment, (it works for me) to add testing packages to an otherwise stable base system, you have to tell portage that thats what you want. You do that by adding the package names to /etc/portage/package.keywords.
You are not doing Code: | Second step: Installing modular X
If you are running a stable system, add the required packages to /etc/portage/package.keywords. Download the package list, and open it in a text editor of your choice. Copy and paste the full modular X mask over to package.keywords. If none of that made any sense, read the handbook section on masking | from the migration guide correctly. Create /etc/portage/package.keywords, its not present by defualt, since it would be empty. _________________ Regards,

It helps to read. Xorg 7 is not hardmasked, it is keyword masked. |

chaosteam2000,
No, thats not good. Xorg 6.9 is xorg 6.8 with all the changes except the split into many packages. It will not be maintained. don't use it.
Does /usr/portage/x11-base/xorg-x11/xorg-x11-7.0-r1.ebuild exist on your system?
If not, you need to No amount of unmasking will help if you don't have the ebuilds in your portage tree.
Looking in that file shows Code: | KEYWORDS="~alpha ~amd64 ~arm ~hppa ~ia64 ~mips ~ppc ~ppc64 ~sh ~sparc ~x86 ~x86-fbsd" | so its in testing for just about everything. Thats what the "~" means.
Please post the output of _________________ Regards,

Code: | Second step: Installing modular X

Copy and paste the full modular X mask over to package.keywords. If none of that made any sense, read the handbook section on masking |
maybe you didn't notice the difference "package.unmask" <-> "package.keywords"
to check, which one you need to edit try:
Code: | emerge -p =xorg-x11-7.0
These are the packages that I would merge, in order:
Calculating dependencies
!!! All ebuilds that could satisfy "=xorg-x11-7.0-r1" have been masked.
!!! One of the following masked packages is required to complete your request:
- x11-base/xorg-x11-7.0-r1 (masked by: ~x86 keyword)
For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man page or
refer to the Gentoo Handbook.
|
so in that case you could start with
Code: | echo "=x11-base/xorg-x11-7.0-r1" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords |
this results to
Code: | emerge -p =xorg-x11-7.0-r1
These are the packages that I would merge, in order:
Calculating dependencies -
!!! All ebuilds that could satisfy ">=x11-apps/setxkbmap-1.0.1" have been masked.
!!! One of the following masked packages is required to complete your request:
- x11-apps/setxkbmap-1.0.2 (masked by: ~x86 keyword)
For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man page or
refer to the Gentoo Handbook.
!!! (dependency required by "x11-base/xorg-x11-7.0-r1" [ebuild])
|
now you could go on with "echo "=x11-apps/setxkbmap-1.0.1" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords"
...
there are probably some tools around which help you editing the package.*-files
good luck and don't hesitate
P.S.: package.unmask would be the right one if it says "(masked by package.mask)" _________________ just my 2 cents |

maybe i should add a note to prevent future-confusion:
i prefer adding a specific version (e.g. =x11-base/xorg-x11-7.0-r1) to the package.*-files as i don't want to stay on testing in general and i wanna notice any status change
this might lead to some confusion if there would be added a version x11-base/xorg-x11-7.0-r2 and the version x11-base/xorg-x11-7.0-r1 would be dropped from the portage tree
as a result, portage would try to downgrade to some 6.* version which you probably don't want
as an alternative you could also try in package.keywords
Code: | x11-base/xorg-x11
=x11-base/xorg-x11-7.0* |

ups there is a problem
Calculating dependencies .... done!
!!! Error: the <=x11-base/xorg-x11-6.9 package conflicts with another package;

!!! Please use 'emerge --pretend' to determine blockers.
what did i wrong?
i have mask the x11-6.9

chaosteam2000,
You appear to have a version od xorg-x11 before version 7.0 installed. Do what it says about the -p and post the emerge output that says,
...is blocked by ....
It will be in red text, so you can't miss it. _________________ Regards,
