Hi. I am new to Gentoo, and I am trying to install 1.4_rc3. I booted straight from the CD, and it seemed to go well, but doesn't seem to recognize my pcmcia adapter.

This is an older Compaq Armada 7400, with a Compaq Netelligent 10/100. I ran the 'net-setup' command, but this didn't seem to help. ifconfig -a shows:

dummy0
lo
sit0

no eth0, and never heard of sit0 before.

I was running Redhat on the laptop, and it had found the card just fine.

dmesg |egrep eth0 shows:

eth0: D-Link DE-600 pocket adapter: not at I/O 0x378
eth0: depca_probe() cannot find device at 0x0200
eth0: ewrk3_probe() cannot find device at 0x0300
eth0: i82596 initialization timed out

Not sure where to go from here. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Chris

card "D-Link DE-650 Ethernet"
version "D-Link", "DE-650"
bind "pcnet_cs"

card "D-Link DE-660+ Ethernet"
version "D-Link", "DE-660+"
bind "pcnet_cs"

card "D-Link DE-650 Ethernet"
tuple 0x40, 0x0009, "D-Link PC Ethernet Card"
bind "pcnet_cs"

This is a dump of /etc/pcmcia/config see your card,no

Add

card "D-Link DE-600 Ethernet"
version "D-Link", "DE-600"
bind "pcnet_cs"

to /etc/pcmcia/config

now if you need this working during the install you will have to insmod pcnet_cs manually and all of its dependencies.

after install add the above to /etc/pcmcia/config will enable automatic init.

Just so you don't think you are going crazy...

I just bought an old Compaq Armada 7700dmt for a client with the intention of making it a Linux dumb-terminal. I tried to use my trust D-Link 670-TXD PCMCIA network card to no avail. The live CD see's it, but can't seem to map it to a device.

I take the same card, and plug it into another old laptop, boot the same Live CD, but this time on my CTX EZbook 700G, and TADA, the LiveCD seems to be able to use it.

I think there might be something funny with the PCMCIA chipset, though if I turn off metalog I see an error message on my console about a syntax error in the net.eth0 script. Time to troll the net...
