Now I have spent about three days on this, trying to get xemacs-gtk to install. I get this error message when installing:

Since it fails on the checking/configure part of the install, I am at a loss as to what the problem could be. I have done the obvious "emerge sync", "emerge -u --deep world", and checked if latest stable esd is installed properly (I can run esd and get startup sound). Note the packages were deleted and downloaded using emerge just moments before, for the sake of the code snippet.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

could you solve the problem? i have the same problem on my box here. i tryed 21.4.8 because i read somewhere that this version makes still the less problems. 
its a ppc machine and xemacs 21.4.9 didn't compile because of this error here:

i saw others with this problem too, but no solutions.
is there anybody who can help?
