Whatever happened to Larry the Cow? I'm sure there used to be a poster of him here:
http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/about.xml
But alas he is no longer there. Is he still the official Gentoo mascot?

He used to be on The Philosophy of Gentoo but he isn't. As far as I know he's still our mascot. There has been a new design being implemented for the website, his disappearance could be linked to the redesign.

Not true (yes, I really have nothing better to do with my time than research bovine references).

If you want larry to stay around and be prevalent. I'd suggest that you talk with curtis about it. He's in charge of the website design. I'd like him and the little alien guy stay around as well.

How is it not true? From the page you linked:

Quote:
Today "cow" is frequently used incorrectly as a gender-neutral term, although it is meant to be used solely to mean female (females of other animals, such as whales or elephants, are also called cows). To refer to a specific number of these animals without specifying their gender, it must be stated as (for example) "ten head of cattle."

Well where I come from (England) the term "cow" is commonly used to refer to the female of the species whilst the male is called a "bull".
cow (ANIMAL) Show phonetics
noun [C]
1 a large female farm animal kept to produce meat and milk:
a dairy cow
http://dictionary.cambridge.org/define.asp?key=17835&dict=CALD
So I think "Larry the Bull Calf" would have been much more appropriate!

He's been put out to graze, obviously! Personally, I hope he doesn't get nuked and replaced with something more sleek in the name of professionalism or some such garbage...

I'll second that, Larry is hardcore. I'd rather have Larry than Tux wearing a hat or something.

EDIT: Or a nameless mascot that can be refered to as daemon...

I'm all for professionalism, when it fits the bill. Gentoo is a community distribution, and in many respects caters to hobbyists, so the look and feel should represent a more friendly environment. So... keep larry, and the little alien dude!
(not that I thought they were going anywhere)

Agreed. Plus, the page looks better with images and text.

That's the way it is where I come from (California, where we have "happy cows"), too. The thought of milking Larry at the crack of dawn is a bit odd.

Not necessarily. Every other distribution uses penguins -- often without their consent. The poor flightless waterfowl are given no respite from the rigors of involuntary servitude. Every day the abuse grows worse.

But Gentoo, on the otherhand, has a willing mascot. A mascot so tough he volunteered to do the job. He's been with us since Gentoo's inception, and has never complained. He's a standard bearer.

Debian doesn't have a mascot. I like larry, though.

According to the wikipedia, Knurt is also a mascot. Does no one care about Knurt?

Looks more like a GNU to me, not a cow like larry.
