Why did this go ~arch? 7.0->7.1 caused massive breakage of binary video drivers. It should still be masked, as a *LOT* of users, probably the majority, use these drivers.

Now I have to manually mask it and re-downgrade...

I have downgrade xorg-server back to version 1.0.2-r4, but I am having trouble with the fonts showing up correctly. The fonts are no showing up at all in some of menus and on the desktop they are all black, they use to be white. I have a nvidia video card.

Hi,

If Nvidia KDE users want to see their fonts with xorg 7.1, click start->control center, Appearance & Themes (top One), fonts (With the "Tt" icon), check "Use Anti-Aliasing", click Configure, and enable Sub-Pixel Hinting. Apply and restart xorg.

Kablam! Fonts in KDE now render.

Firefox fonts are a bit borked though, still figuring it out.

The firefox problem I seem to have got around at least for the moment by using Bitstream Vera Sans as the default font and then in advanced, proportional is set to serif, the rest are set to their bitstream vera equivalents.
That seems to have sorted most of the firefox problems out but the size still doesn't show in the selection drop-down menu. That's about the only fault I can find atm but i've only been booted up for a couple of mins.

Edit: running utf-8 and western btw.

I honestly have to say that the problems I am having with xorg 7.1 and my nvidia drivers are really cool. When I open firefox, half of the fonts don't render (the screen is just blank). 90% of the time, when I move the cursor over that area of the screen, the text suddenly appears. It's like a game. ("and what's behind caption number one?") Sometimes if I scroll the screen, all of the "hidden" text appears. Same thing with some of the fonts on my desktop - just move the cursor over and they appear. This is in fluxbox. It's really cool.

There are a few problems: I can't get the fonts in conky to appear, even with moving the cursor over them, and the menus in BibblePro don't show up, and also the menus in programs under wine. But all-in-all a fair trade-off, I feel.

I usually use XGL/compiz, which has no problems with the current Xorg 7.1 and ~nvidia drivers, for some reason, don't know why. (I didn't even know there was a problem until I wanted to do something in fluxbox, then suddenly my font's weren't there - then I discovered this thread.)

Oh crap, half of my text dissapeared while writing this... and the cursor trick didn't work... luckily 'preview' button brings it back... Maybe not quite so cool after all... :roll:

How do I downgrade back to 7.0 where I was happily humming along in gentooland.

7.1 sucks!!

Spent the last two days trying to get my box back into shape. I got better things to do! I'm now back where I was just after emerge -uaDN world updated me to 7.1 and screwed everything up. 1.0.99 is blocking nvidia and hence any future meaningful updates. Fonts are missing from anjuta. Half to all my source code is blank!

I want to mask off 7.1 and downgrade back to 7.0 without messing everything up. How do I do that please?? Really appreciate some help.

Hi there,

Rather than revert the ~arch to 7.0, I would recommend that all users with broken binary drivers ping their system integrators, graphics vendor, or chipset manufacturer directly and request support. It will only work if we all ask.

Untill then, we all need to "deal". Do what you have to. Use 7.0, use vesa, whatever it takes. I personally agree with Chris H on this one. Xorg needs to break ABI compatability more often, we need to complain louder, and nvidia/ati needs to release specs and code under an unencumbered license.

What else is broken here besides nvidia? If I unmerge nvidia and use nv will that fix stuff until they come out with a compatible driver? Or is there more to it than just the nvidia problem. I'm seeing evaporating font when I open anjuta and my clock has gone haywire. It's way off! I've waisted two whole days on this mess. Not a happy camper...

Another option is umerge xorg-7.1 and go back to perfectly fine xorg-6.8.2-r7 but how do I correctly clean my system and prevent unwanted updating to modular x??

Well, I'm having the weird occasional missing font problem (w/digg especially and with courier too). That, and the arrow keys don't work unless I use the numeric keypad. Oh, and the buttons were remapped in ut2004
