Hi, I just can't get X up on my new machine.
I have configured gentoo on 5-6 machines, but this one is a pain in the ass, i just can't get te X up.
I have followed all of the usual guides, but with no luck.

I have a xorg.conf, and if I type
Code:
X -config xorg.conf.new
I can see the nvidia logo, and the gray background (X), and i can move the mouse. So the config should work. BUT, when I use the same config, and try to start xdm, gdm or startx, I just get a black screen, and i can't get out of it again. The only solution is to reboot (cant use alt-ctrl-F1 either).

I really hope somebody can help me out...

Setup:
AMD 64 X2
nVidia 7900 GT
x86_64 Gentoo 2006.1
GCC 4.1.1

X -config xorg.conf.new

It looks to me as if X is not using the xorg.conf you posted, but a different one. The startx output is reporting this:

Quote:
...
(==) Using config file: "/root/xorg.conf"
(EE) Failed to load module "evdev" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) No Input driver matching `evdev'
...
Fatal server error:
failed to initialize core devices

But, your posted xorg.conf file has no mention of "evdev" anywhere. Is that xorg.conf file located in /root or in /etc/X11 or somewhere else? And, when you execute startx, are you running as root or as a regular user? What happens when you run as a regular user?

YES, i was using the wrong xorg.conf when i triggered startx as root. So i tried it as a normal user, and X started up nice (nvidia driver, not nv). BUT, i still have the black screen (of death) when i use a login manager (xdm og gdm). Any solutions?

I would say renaming the xorg.conf file in /root to xorg.conf.old or something so there's no chance it'll get loaded instead will fix your issue. It would appear that xdm is loading the one from /root and not from /etc/X11 which is why they're producing different results.

If that doesn't fix it, post your full Xorg.0.log here and we'll see what the problem is.

And again, true :)
xdm works now! Just bcause of the rename, i thought xdm always was looking in /etc/X11/...

thanks.

I thought so to until a week or so ago. On one of my latest Gentoo installs I noticed X reading from /root instead of /etc/X11 ... if not for that, I'm not sure I'd have been able to help.
