No matter how much i search google and try different settings within the kernel, i still can't get this to work. I have a 250GB SATA 3.00gb/s hard drive and apparently a compatible motherboard, yet lspci does not detect anything. I'm relatively new when it comes to gentoo, but am slowly learning by my mistakes!!!

If anyone has any idea how to get this working, please let me know!!!

Thanks in advance

:? lspci wont detect hard drives if thats what your meaning, since they connect by sata not pci, maybe thats where your confused?

When you say new to gentoo I assume you have experience with another distro, if you have did it work with the sata drive on this motherboard? If so boot the other distro and run lsmod which will help you know which modules you need to load/build into the kernel in gentoo...

Once the required modules are loaded the drive should show up as /dev/sda (because sata uses scsi emulation) and be usable (cfdisk /dev/sda should work) and you can continue from there

Good luck

what i was looking for in lspci was a little message saying "serial ata controller....." or something to that effect.

as far as other distros are concerned, i decided to dive into the deep end and go for gentoo straight off. think what i might do is load up a live cd and see what happens.

thanks for such a prompt response though
