Hi,
I have a PowerBook G4 (17" 1.67 GHz, 1GB RAM) boot ROM (4.9.1f3) and I'm thinking on running Gentoo but would like to do it without touching its Hard-disk (reason: work laptop), so I'm thinkin on buying either:
- external USB memory stick
- external USB Hard Disk (portable)
- external Firewire Hard Disk (portable).
I've been searching around but can't get a clear picture. Do you know if it's possible to boot Linux (Gentoo) from USB HD or Memory stick? if not, is it possible to do it from the Firewire?
Thanks a lot in advance,
Luis

Check out this Linux Journal article about installing Yellow Dog Linux on an iPod and booting Macs from the iPod into Linux. The details may be different, but if it can be done with Yellow Dog from an iPod, you should be able to do it with one of your external drive choices. |

The directions for installing on a firewire drive are actually already included in the handbook. The differences are minor. :) _________________ Gentoo PPC FAQ: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-ppc-faq.xml |

Thanks for your answers. If I understand correctly booting from Firewire HD is supported, however can you clarify if it's possible to boot from a USB HD?.
thanks

I haven't tried it, so I'm not positive, but as far as I know, OpenFirmware can boot from USB as well. For what it's worth, I built the generic PPC GRP package on a firewire root Gentoo install, so I'm sure that works. :) _________________ Gentoo PPC FAQ: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-ppc-faq.xml |

To close the topic. I've finally decided to buy a Firewire external disk.
