Hi folks,
My sound card seems to work fine on my Inspiron 8200, but whilst looking for other firmware updates I came accross "alsa-firmware".
Do I need to install this? Will it enable goodies I previously did not know were there?
Thanks

just emerged it and - big surprise - it brings a couple of firmware loaders & images.
alsa guide says "Some specific sound cards can benefit from certain tools provided by the alsa-tools and alsa-firmware packages."
so, actually alsa-tools brings the goodies. found a list at http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/view/stable/multimedia/alsa-tools.html ; don't think you need those.
