For some reason, X has started to only sometimes display text. See:

Depending on the application, text will randomly disappear. In a terminal, it seems quite rare. In my newsreader, it is very rare. In firefox, it is very common, and seeming patternless. For example, sometimes highlighting will make it appear, sometimes mouseover will. The digg comments flash with a period of about a second.
I tried downgrading the nvidia driver, but it had no effect. Whenever I try to use the 'vesa' or 'nv' drivers instead of 'nvidia', I get a 'frequency out of range' error from my screen. When I disabled RenderAccel etc in the xorg.conf, it seemed to improve the problem (less text disappeared) although it most definitely didn't fix it.
I can't see any errors in Xorg.0.log.
The issue has occured in both gnome and XFCE.
I really don't know what's happening here. The only thing I can think to try would be downgrading from Xorg7, to see if that fixes the issue, but it seems pretty drastic and I suspect it might break a lot more. |
