I have just gotten an AP and a wireless PCMCIA card for my laptop. I had hoped for a better quality. I think it is a bit slow to respond when I connect to new websites.
Code: | # iwconfig wlan0
wlan0 IEEE 802.11-b ESSID:"Hole" Nickname:"Hole"
Mode:Managed Frequency:2.437 GHz Access Point: 00:03:2F:19:94:E4
Bit Rate:11 Mb/s Tx-Power:18 dBm
Retry min limit:8 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Encryption key:****-****-****-****-****-****-** Security mode:restricted
Link Quality=21/92 Signal level=-71 dBm Noise level=-92 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

Is a Link Quality of 21/92 bad?
There is about 30ft / 10m to the AP, and two doors between. Is this too much?
I'm using 128bit WEP key. Does this have a serious impact on performence? |

As far as i know WEP will affect the transfer speed a bit just how much i am not sure, try checking the manufacturer site.
On another note it does not matter what size your WEP key is from a security standpoint because it can easily be broken same as WPA so in your case it is just an added overhead. If the network can be cabled then i'd get rid of the wireless asap, if not then at least make sure that the signal cannot be picked up beyond the house/building using an antenna if so then reduce the transmit power of the access point or better yet invest in WPA2 gears. _________________ http://www.di.fm/trance |

peter_poulsen,
Your link quality is not good but its adequate. You are still getting 11Mbits, which is as good as it gets.
The crypto can slow the useful data rate, so do you actually need it al all. Look at using ssh for all transactions over the wifi,
Then the WEP is only used to stop bandwidth theft. e.g. spammers using your network. _________________ Regards,
