Hi. After letting my xbox sit unused for over a year, I decided to turn it into a linux-only server. The mod and install went fine, and when I plug it into my router, it gets an IP address and can connect to the internet. I can access my router through a browser and check out a list of what machines are connected: the router sends back a little table showing the hostname of the computer, it's MAC, and the IP it was assigned. The problem is the xbox always comes back as "unknown" -- no hostname. I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions. I have a laptop running gentoo also, and when it connects it hostname shows up. I compared the /etc/conf.d/hostname files on both of them, and my syntax is right. The laptop --in fact every computer I hook up to the network except the xbox-- is wireless, and their hostnames all show up correctly. I initially installed Xebian on the xbox and didn't like it, I'm not used to how debian does things, but it failed to identify itself to the router as well. I'll try resetting the router to it's factory defaults later, but right now I can't without messing up my girlfriend's internet connection.

ANy suggestions on what I could try?

you need to tell dhcpcd to supply the hostname. This is done with the -h option
Code:
/sbin/dhcpcd -h hostname eth0

This should be the default on current baselayouts, check your conf.d/net file to see if it has been disabled. I just have mine blank and that does the trick.
