POST graphics card with Xorg running?

I am trying to get my laptop to suspend to RAM, however when I resume I have to POST my graphics card using vbetool to get my console to work. This is all fine and dandy in text mode, but when I do this with xorg running the computer disgrees and locks up. So, is there a way to POST my graphics card when I have xorg running that won't cause it to die?
