I put this in portage because I used portage to install the newest version of sendmail, and i started it via
Code:
/etc/init.d/sendmail start

but for some reason I have no ~/.maildir, and the mail command doesn't work...

Thoughts / suggestions?

Sendmail is a mail transfer agent, not a local mail client. To mail from the command line you can emerge something like nail or mailx.
