Hi !
I'm using gentoo and ubuntu on the same pc , and both have firefox and bookmark files in ~/.mozilla/firefox .
I want to have all the bookmarks in both firefoxes without having to be copying the file over from one to the other or merging them manually ...
I tried to delete one of the files in one firefox and create a symbolic link to the other hoping that when firefox accessed the file it would get to the other one ... but it didn't run anymore so i had to delete the link and it worked again creating a blank bookmark file.
if i try to run one of the firefoxes from the other distro it comes up as if it was the first time i was using firefox (with a blank bookmarks file).

Any ideas ?

Thanx

Are you using the same home directory for both distros? If so, and I understand you correctly, the bookmark file is the same on both (which it should be) then I don't see why you'd be having the problem. Perhaps each saves the bookmarks differently, but that sounds like a stupid thing to do.

Try using a hard link instead of a symbolic one. It will only work though if both files are on the same filesystem.

Just leave off the -s option when you create the link.

Edit: actually, that might not work either depending on how firefox creates the backup copy of the bookmarks.html file on startup. If it just copies the file to the backup, then you will probably be ok. However, if it moves the original to the backup name and then copies that to the default name, nothing you do will work other than using the same profile directory for both.

Use the Foxmarks extension for firefox.

Have a look at the scrapbook extension.. I use it with a common directory for 4 or 5 different distros
