|
|
im looking for a WORKING! business solution for backing up client harddisk images via network, to restore them immediately in case the drive failed.
actually, im working with norton ghost, works miserable over network.
sometimes, restore of boot partitions doesnt work, sometimes i get strange windows errors when i boot the image, it takes ages to restore the drive over ethernet (and its not the network speed) - now this is not a really serious solution...
because of all this trouble, to clone a disk of wich content im really concerned about, i use norton ghost boot disk locally (boots to DOS and starts ghost from floppy), wich works very well but of cause this is extremely time intensive and in no way a business solution.
so im looking for a linux backup server and backup client for WINDOWS PCs, for lets say not more then 100 client computers.
can somebody please help me here find something like that?
thank you very much in advance,
stephan. |

Quote: | Don't expect to reconstruct a complete WinXX drive
The conclusion from the last few items is that BackupPC is not intended to allow a complete WinXX disk to be re-imaged from the backup. Our approach to system restore in the event of catastrophic failure is to re-image a new disk from a generic master, and then use the BackupPC archive to restore user files.
It is likely that linux/unix backups done using tar (rather than smb) can be used to reconstruct a complete file system, although I haven't tried it.

i know backuppc but it wont fit my needs since it cant restore a complete drive image...
i want to backup the complete drive / a partition, so in case of drive failure i just have to take a new drive
and restore a complete (in most cases bootable) partition.
userdata is, of course, safed on fileserver anyway. |

the description sounds really good, although it doesnt work with an windows client and i have to use the cd in the backup/restore subject.

that means, still no automated or remote operation... for around 100 subjects? not working for me... _________________ ... |

check in the GWN a week or two back. It had a link to a gentoo based rescue cd. It had a complete backup image/restore capability that I think worked with WindBlows too. _________________ Brian

Yeah, Thats the one. I was too tired to look it up awhile ago. Checking it now, it uses partimage, which has limited ntfs support. I Did not stumble on any info about a windows client though. _________________ Brian

I don't know about win-xp, but I remember back in the days when I was using Mandrake that linux was much faster at any network transfer, whether it was ftp, http, Transfering a cd image from my old pentium to my daughters athlon 1ghz. (to burn it) it was a;ways faster if I rebooted her machine to linux for the transfer. That is with a 10/100 network running at 100MB.
So a live-cd backup method is probably the faster method to use. _________________ Brian
