alrighty... possibly another silly question...but...
I followed the desktop install instructions, and have now set up KDE..
it seems to boot okay, but all i'm presented with is a desktop with a terminal and xsm...
shouldnt i have a launch bar somewhere??

Try this ...
echo startkde > ~/.xinitrc
It will create a file called .xinitrc in your home folder and put startkde on a single line in it. Then try startx again.
Alternatively, try typing simply kdm at the command prompt and taking it from there.
