I'm looking for something that will allow me to play music and watch DVDs on my TV. MythTV looks great for this (its image viewer and weather module look cool too) but I don't need any of the cable TV functionality since I don't have cable. Is there another program that would work to just play music and DVDs? I want to be able to control it with a remote control and see the UI on my TV. Is MythTV the best choice even if I don't want the cable TV stuff? |

Freevo looks pretty cool. It seems to have all the basic features of MythTV but very watered down. I think it would make more sense to use MythTV so the features I do use work better. For example, it looks like MythTV can build playlists manually while Freevo requires a plugin that isn't in portage. I looks like I would still have to build all the cable TV stuff with Freevo anyway. |

But serious, if you just want to want a DVD viewer and music player, Myth might indeed be overkill. Mplayer or xine will play all that you want, the only thing you need is a (lirc) front-end for it. Maybe freevo is not such a bad idee at all. |

GeeXboX may be just what you want. No HDTV output though. |
