Code: |
strip: i386-pc-linux-gnu-strip --strip-unneeded

and it hangs there. curiously enough however, the hard-drive activity light stays on as long as i let this go.
i got this computer at a garage sale, so maybe its a hardware error? emerge.log, alt+f12, lspci, and roaming through /proc doesn't seem to reveal anything though. |

well, check in your make.conf to see if you have a PORTAGE_NICENESS setting and remove it. That helped me a lot. Either that or you're compiling a huge program and you just need to wait. A lot. Make sure you're using sane C-Flags and check your use flags and LDFlags. And upgrade to the latest unstable portage, because so far it's a lot better, and faster by far, and may fix your issue.
DO NOT FORGET TO READ THE TEXT THAT COMES OUT AFTER THE UPGRADE if you do decide to upgrade Portage. |

I am having the same problem. The previous post did not help me. Has anyone noticed this. The machine I'm running it on is an old PIII 1ghz so maybe it just takes a long time? I waited 10 minutes and it didn't do anything. |

Try waiting longer than 10 minutes. Whenever I install kernel sources I am really never there to see how long the strip takes. |
