freeing up HD space

howdy, i have a chronic lack of HD space problem, and i was wondering if there is any way to free some cached files from portage. i noticed that fetched packages get stored in /usr/portage/distfiles even after the app is merged. is there a command to delete these files, or would getting rid of them break portage in some way...? any other HD space saver tips would be much appreciated aswell. thanks.
