I've managed to sort through emerging the bcm43xx driver, fwcutting the firmware, but now when I try

modprobe bcm43xx

I get the following warnings and finally error messages:

WARNING: Error inserting ieee80211_crypt (/lib/modules/2.6.16-gentoo-r7/net/ieee80211/ieee80211_crypt.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
WARNING: Error inserting ieee80211 (/lib/modules/2.6.16-gentoo-r7/net/ieee80211/ieee80211.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
WARNING: Error inserting ieee80211softmac (/lib/modules/2.6.16-gentoo-r7/net/ieee80211/ieee80211softmac.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
FATAL: Error inserting bcm43xx (/lib/modules/2.6.16-gentoo-r7/net/wireless/bcm43xx.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)

Any ideas? I'm on a Dell D600 laptop with a Dell mini-pci wireless card.

Thanks.[/quote]

If you are happy using release candidate kernels the advice is to use the bcm driver in the 2.6.17rc kernel.

I think that you need to turn off ieee80211 in the 2.6.16 kernel for the module to work, but this is from memory, as I use the 2.6.17 kernel approach. This driver does not work with 2.6.15 kernel.

Thanks - that's looking to be the easiest course of action.
