kernel config for thinkpad 600

has anyone been able to get sound to work on the tp600? When I configured my kernel, I made sound as a module, but cs4232 was not an option (I believe cs46xx was).

Is there a way to manually change the kernel config from the cs46xx to cs4232, and recompile? I'm using the gentoo sources.

Also, can anyone explain why every distro can use sound on a thinkpad with some tinkering, but with gentoo you have to use a boot disk, and manually change irq settings (and hope you don't screw anything up)??
