I've been trying to get my iPod Nano to sync with gtkpod in gentoo but i keep getting the following errors:
Code:

Error while writing to '/mnt/ipod/iPod_Control/Music/F00/gtkpod616579.mp3' (Input/output error).

Path not found: '/mnt/ipod/iPod_Control/Music/F01'.

Path not found: '/mnt/ipod/iPod_Control/Music/F02'.

Path not found: '/mnt/ipod/iPod_Control/Music/F03'.

Path not found: '/mnt/ipod/iPod_Control/Music/F04'.

I've checked the paths and the wierd thing is that the directories exist before I attempt to sync, but afterwards they have disappeared. When I remount the iPod they appear again. The Input/output error is returned for every single file I try to transfer.

I'm running a 2.6.15-gentoo-r1 kernel and other USB devices work perfectly.

The entry for the ipod in my /etc/fstab is as follows:
Code:

/dev/ipod               /mnt/ipod       vfat            user,noauto,nodev,rw,umask=077,gid=1000,uid=1000,defaults,noatime 0 0

I've also tried adding the async option as described in the Using an iPod with Gentoo Linux
(http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Using_an_iPod_With_Gentoo_Linux)

The same settings work without a glitch on my laptop running ubuntu (2.6.12-10-386 kernel).

Also when I try to eject the device in gentoo the following error is returned:
Code:

eject /dev/ipod
eject: unable to open `/dev/sda2'

Maybe someone has seen something similar and knows how to fix it.

Thanks in advance

Thomas

Keep the async option in there. As for the gtkpod problem, you could try and isolate the problem to the software itself. Do you use KDE and amarok? If so, try using amarok's (1.4_beta3) ipod support. It's better than gtkpod in my opinion, but even if you don't like amarok, you might aswell try just to see if it's gtkpod's problem and not your ipod.

Or you could try re-formatting the device on a windows box (using the apple update software and clicking restore) then plugging it in and syncing with gtkpod.

My fstab (ipod 5G)
Code:

/dev/ipod               /mnt/ipod       vfat            async,nodev,nosuid,user,rw,noauto,umask=0000,noexec     0 0

async is the default option, you don't need to add it to fstab.

I would reformat the ipod in HFS+ w/o journaling (use hfsplusutils) and try creating the directory structure again with gtkpod.

Tried to transfer using amarok but it still fails at 66% (just as gtkpod too) and returns a similar error as the one mentioned in the beginning of my first post.

Changes in fstab didn't help either and I've tried reformatting it (windows formatted iPod) several times before but to no avail. Personally I suspect there's a configuration issue on my gentoo system because as I've mentioned before, the same device works flawlessly on my laptop.

Yup, must be your system, maybe the kernel? Did you follow that gentoo-wiki guide? I followed that one closely and everything works fine.

I had problems like this, ended up being my USB ports. I just had to find one the iPod liked.

I had issues like this.

1) your ipod has a problem. This I've seen with Hard drive based models
2) your system has a problem, more specificly, your USB ports. all my onboard ones started doing something similiar.
An addon card fixed it.

YMMV
