On my system I have an external firewire hard drive normally designated as sdb. But if I accidentally boot with my Ipod plunged in, it takes the sdb spot and pushes my firewire drive to sdc. This causes a problem with my system because my home directory is on that external drive. Is there a way to keep it from being pushed to sdc when I boot with the Ipod plunged in?

Why not just define some udev rules to assign aliases to them?

baeaan,

I guess your system is set up to use udev. If so, you could create a file in /etc/udev/rules.d called 10-udev.rules. In there you should create some lines (udev-rules) that determine how your drives are mapped to device names.

On how to create udev-rules please consult http://reactivated.net/writing_udev_rules.html.

So long,
der erpl
