Hi,
I have a wins server running on samba and was wondering if it is wise to have more than one wins server per subnet. I think the samba docs tell you not to, but the person who set up wins on this network might have indeed had two, one of which definitely isn't now and I keep getting a lot of errors in the logs regarding packets that should be sent to a wins server and not here, which I am cleaning up on the offending machines. It got me thinking whether I should have a second WINS server as a backup, the way people usually have 2 dns servers.
Any suggestions or experiences? _________________ The Human Equation:

Hi,
early versions of the WINS server inside samba weren't able to have a backup WINS server and synchronize their data. Until 3.0.22 it is possible to use Samba4WINS from SerNET (optional package, in samba 4 integrated), which allows replication of the WINS database. Take a look at http://ftp.sernet.de/pub/samba4WINS/. |
