I experience erratic freezes of my entire system at the moment which i am unable to track down to their source (as the logs seem clean and upon freeze i can't do nothing ^^).
So far i can say the following:
- In kernel 2.6.20-gentoo-r8 the freezes are less often than in other kernels (newer ones)
- kernels that freeze more often and after shorter periods of time are all kernels >= 2.6.21 (including gentoo-sources and ck-sources (the last ck))
- the freezes seem to be connected to audio playback, but i can not be sure about this, since i always play audio when i work with my pc
- i GUESS that somewhere along the way, some part of alsa got updated (recently), so this part is compiled for the later kernel, while i forgot to recompile alsa-driver to suit the 2.6.22 kernel so it crashed due to versioning conflicts

I am not sure, however, if this would explain the symptoms? Is it nessesary to recompile alsa-driver, alsa-lib and alsa-headers as well as alsa-oss everytime the kernel changes? If yes. i might have found the problem (and the system shouldn't freeze again.
Else: Since it's quite hard to google on freezes of kernels and if they are more frequent in newer kernels (or a known problem since the switch to 2.6.22), does someone here know of similar issues that can be traced to the kernel, the version of the kernel or some part of incorrect configuration of the kernel?

It's hard to troubleshoot this, so i'd be thankful for any help there is..
btw- i got alsa built externally, so in kernel there's just general sound support. (because i use the VIA HD audio (onboard), for which i need to tell alsa to build the intel_hda module.)
TIA all of you :)

edit: For anyone reading this: The problem with the k8t890 chipset couldn't be solved. Whether this is a general problem with this chipset and the Athlon64 X2, i could not determine. I changed the motherboard and everything works (tm) now.

If anyone is interested/experiences the same issues:
It looks as if these problems have something to do with the VIA Chipset K8T890 (ASrock Alive Sata2 Glan mainboard) have troubles with either nvidia graphics or the CPU itself. Anywho... i downloaded the new bios version from the asrock homepage (asrock.com) and flashed the bios.
As of now, i am working with the pc for 1 hour, music running, typing excessively etc for testing purposes, maybe that 2.60 Bios solves these problems for ASRock users (the fix states that USB/Audio is fixed and is released 2 month after the bios version the board had, so it looks as if it was a high priority problem) ... at least if someone has the same problem you now know a place to start from ;)
