Prepare for one of the strangest stories:
Last night after rebooting to gentoo my mouse was practically dead. It would not work neither under gpm nor X (in X remaining "fixed" at the centre of the screen). Since I had not changed any configuration settings I thought it was a mechanical/hardware failure. You can immagine my surprise when I found that it worked still fine under windows and knoppix... Calling remotely X applications not only work but - what came as surprise to me - they use _my_ pointers and not the ones defined in the host Xserver.
Any ideas???

what is the mouse connected to? If it's a ps/2 mouse, try 'cat /dev/psaux' as root.
If it's a USB mouse, have you loaded the USB modules? try 'lsmod' as root...
if the usbmouse is connected, it should answer to 'cat /dev/input/mice'
try that first...

i had that same exact problem. the only way i knew it wasnt a power failure is because my mouse is an optical mouse. when the usb drivers load, the laser flicekrs to life. when the drivers loaded in linux... nothing.
but when i turn my computer on, the laser flickered when my bios enumerated the usb ports. so i knew it wasnt the mouse. i ended up reinstalling gentoo i think. there were other problems as well, and i needed a good excuse 
so i honestly wouldn't know what caused it. sorry

It's a classic 3-button ps/2 mouse. Starting X and trying some moves or clicks prints out on "cat /dev/misc/psaux" some symbols: a series of dot-like chars and a single char like a "northeast angle of a square." So, some info does flow from the mouse to the device file.... but the system won't listen to it...
This is getting increasingly obscure...

what do you have in the 'pointing device' section in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 ?
Try this (for a wheel mouse)
Section "Pointer"
Protocol "imps/2"
Device "/dev/psaux"
buttons 5
ZAxisMapping 4 5
EndSection

the usual ps/2 protocol (no wheel), device /dev/psaux.... It worked perfectly until yesterday and no emerging has occured since then... _That's why it's freaking strange. I didn't do ANYTHING! It just died under linux... no errors, no warnings in the X logs... X still believes it's there.
Arghhh!
