joystick + stop-xscreensaver + stop dpms?

I'm just wondering if there is a way to make pushing buttons on a joystick prevent xscreensaver from starting and from the monitor from shutting off. In essence I would like the joystick to act like they keyboard does when you push a key on it. I know with mplayer you can pass -stop-xscreensaver as a parameter to avoid this but what about zsnes or epsxe or other games that use the joystick? is this possible?
