|
|
All the music (mp3) are on disk on the server. Samba is installed and working. The client is a wifi 802.11g client. Player is xmms playing mp3's over the samba filesystem.
Song's periodically cut out, but eventually come back on, sometimes 10 seconds or more later. Is there any way to stop this? Perhaps I have something configured wrong. May be there's a way to cache the music, so xmms can play ahead and deal with latency. Perhaps I need to use some other system then samba to share the music. Any tips would be great!!
The server:
Code: |
# uname -a
2.6.11-gentoo-r6 #3 i686 Pentium II (Deschutes) GenuineIntel GNU/Linux
# equery list samba
[I--] [M ] net-fs/samba-3.0.10 (0)
|
So, machine is a bit slow, but doesn't suffer too much.
The client:
Code: |
# uname -a
2.6.14-gentoo-r2 #2 PREEMPT i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) III Mobile CPU 1133MHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux
# equery list wireless-tools
[I--] [ ] net-wireless/wireless-tools-28_pre10
# equery list autofs
[I--] [ ] net-fs/autofs-4.1.3-r4 (0)
# cat /etc/autofs/auto.network
tib -fstype=smbfs,rw,fmask=770,dmask=770,gid=users,guest ://tib/public
# cat /etc/fstab
:
//tib/public /home/gbc/tib smbfs noauto,user,rw 0 0

I don't know alot about Gentoo on laptops or with wireless net (ordering my laptop from Newegg tomorrow), but some things I can think of are using cifs instead of smbfs for some of it's performance enhancements and lifting the 2GB filesize limit (although probobly isn't a problem in your case). Also, check the signal strength of the Wireless connection. If it's a weak signal, that's probably the problem. _________________ i7-940 2.93Ghz | ASUS P6T Deluxe (v.1) | 24GB Triple Channel RAM | nVidia GTX660

Sorry, stupid question...but, what is accepted method to check signal strength?
Also, i remember having trouble with cifs when i first put samba together. I believe it was an authentication problem, can remember fully. But, I had to go with smbfs to get it all working. Perhaps I'll revisit. |
