Something strange happened:
I rebooted my laptop, and kdm stopped displaying the desktops I have installed on the computer (gnome,kde,fluxbox,...)
I tried out gdm and there everything works fine.
Does anybody know how the kdm-login manager works, where is does look for the "desktops/windows-managers" to choose from
Maybe someone could point me in a direction where I could look to solve this problem

I found this, hope its helpful.
Code: |
root@brainy kdm # cat README
The configuration files in this directory were automatically generated.
As the used algorithms are pretty dumb, the configuration may be broken.
This configuration consists of the following files:
- /usr/kde/3.1/share/config/kdm/kdmrc
- /usr/kde/3.1/share/config/kdm/Xservers
- /usr/kde/3.1/share/config/kdm/Xaccess
- /usr/kde/3.1/share/config/kdm/Xwilling
- /usr/kde/3.1/share/config/kdm/Xresources
- /usr/kde/3.1/share/config/kdm/Xsetup
- /usr/kde/3.1/share/config/kdm/Xstartup
- /usr/kde/3.1/share/config/kdm/Xreset
- /usr/kde/3.1/share/config/kdm/Xsession
- /usr/kde/3.1/share/config/kdm/backgroundrc
This configuration was derived from the following files:
- /etc/X11/xdm/xdm-config
- /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers
- /etc/X11/xdm/Xaccess
- /etc/X11/xdm/Xresources
Have a look at the program <kdebase-sources>/kdm/kfrontend/genkdmconf
if you want to generate another configuration.
root@brainy kdm # pwd
/usr/kde/3.1/share/config/kdm
root@brainy kdm #

Thank you, this did indeed point me to the right direction.
What I did was:
Quote: |
emerge -C kdebase
remove all files from "/usr/kde/3.1/share/config/kdm"
emerge -K kdebase (lucky I always emerge binary packages )
|
After this steps, kdm does work fine |
