You have to add your user to audio group

Code:
gpasswd -a <user> audio

Is this reproducible with other apps that use audio? amarok, mplayer, xine/totem etc.?

I can't get the blasted thing running either.

It won't mount the cdrom. I get this error message when I try to manually mount the cdrom.

mount: block device /dev/hdc is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: /dev/hdc: can't read superblock

gnome cd player works fine, mounts cdrom automatically, but xmms just sits there. I emerged xmcd which pulled in xmms. Fine. What I want is a decent cd ripper. Any suggestions ??

grofaz...out

OK...got grip and it seems to run fine, mounts cdrom etc. But no sound! I'm running ALSA so is there something extra I have to do to configure grip ??

Err, Grip is a ripping app... it rips and encodes audio files. But that doesn't require the ability to play audio data.

As for the sound problem, what does xmms say when you start it from cmdline as user?
Could you possibly try to play audio files with a cmdline tool like aplay (.wav) or mpg321 (.mp3) as user?

Actually grip is suppossed to be a cdplayer & a cdripper all in one. I unmerged xmms so can't say at the moment but basically it wouldn't mount /mnt/cdrom. With cd in drive /mnt/cdrom directory showed no files. Press play AudioCD and it just sits there doing nothing. Manually try to mount cdrom and error message box appears as posted above.

@grofaz:

Exuse me, I'm still a bit confused about your prob: Is it a sound or a device problem you have? Why do you always say: "/mnt/cdrom"? This is merely a mount point, the device itself should be /dev/cdrom or something like /dev/hdX. Could you possibly post your /etc/fstab here?

Nevermind! I got it fixed. I --sync 'd and xmms updated, and also I didn't have /mnt setup correctly. It is now:

/mnt/cdrom0
/mnt/cdrom1

which matches what I have in /etc/fstab, so all is well with xmms. Probably also with grip cdplayer too but I haven't confirmed that yet.

Thanks!
