about 3 weeks into my first linux experience and I have finally gotten gnome working, X is all configured (except for sound ?) and I have a few apps installed (k3b, openoffice...) however when i ripped a cd to .ogg and tried to play one of the songs it didnt work. no errors just no sound.
There was an error like
Gnome-mixer applet failed to load
do you want to delete applet?

and i said yes, but since then i have re-emerged gnome-applets

I have tried every available Multimedia System Selection, which are
esound sound damon
OSS sound
ALSA

if i try pressing test, for esound sound daemon it appears to work, no sound.
for oss sound it says failure initializing test pipe, same for alsa.

here is whats up.
at boot this comes up relevent to audio, i think my system thinks its 2005 :)
Code:
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.09rc2 (thu may 24 10:33:39 2005 utc)
ACPI: PCI Interupt 0000:00:02.7[C] ->GSI 18 (level, low) -> IRQ 18
Intel 8x0_measure_ac97_clock: measured 50517 usecs
Intel 8x0: clocking to 48000
ALSA Device list
     #0: SiS S17012 with CMI9761 at 0xdc00, irq 18

lspci | grep audio
Code:
0000:00:02.7 multimedia audio controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] Sound Controller (rev a0)

ls -l /dev/dsp
Code:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 may 24 16:56 /dev/dsp -> sound/dsp

ls-l /dev/sound
Code:
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 12 May 24 16:56 adsp
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 4 May 24 16:56 audio
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 3 May 24 16:56 dsp
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 0 May 24 16:56 mixer
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 1 May 24 16:56 sequencer
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 8 May 24 16:56 sequencer2

I have esound - sound mixer (a sound daemon or something like that) in my default runlevel according to gnome under services.

I cannot get into gnome as root, and my user is in the audio group

help a n00bi

Hi,

First, if the gnome-mixer-applet fails to load, it doesn't mean that alsa doesn't work.

Try running alsamixer in a console and unmute the channels (press M on the selected channel) if you haven't done it yet.

Did you try to play some other kind of sound like mp3 or wav?

What answers have you got with lsmod ?

And did you try to play a sound as root (# aplay /your/audio/file.wav ) ?

lsmod brings up nothing, or rather
Module Size Used by
that is all. I built my sound drivers into the kernel, it is very possible that i have missed something, but i looked it over and it seems to me that i have included everything i need.

alsamixer -> command not found

aplay -> command not found

i am limited with stuff i can emerge, basically i can only emerge things on the grp packages cd, which so far has been enough.

bunk -> stumped again :(

a few days ago i was really happy to be in gnome at last, kinda wearing off now and im back to this sucks, i hate being new at stuff. I wish i could jump straight to guru. 8)

hahah, i found a program called volume control in gnome, and all the volumes were at 0, hahah
funny, being used to windoze that was strange to me, but thanks, these forums are solid gold, without the right people to bounce the wrong questions off to find the right answers, I would be lost. Thanks for helping me on my journey to guru ;)
