|
|
I am trying to install gentoo on a new box I just got. I put in the cd and following the installation guide I get to step #9.
emerge sync
This runs fine but tells me that there has been an update to portage and it __highly__ recommends updating it and updating my configuration files once that is done.
Wanting this to go well, I run :
emerge -p portage
and see that there are a goodly number of packages it wants to work with. Okay, fine. So now I use
emerge portage
It starts scrolling away merrily and then dies trying to do the ncurses. /lib/cpp fails some sort of sanity test and my whole emerge dies.
This isn't mission critical, because I have a nifty little harddrive drawer and I just took the linux HD out and placed the Win XP one back in. Plus, I can't get a hold of the list of USE flags for to set things up for this machine. So, I am bound to be waiting for that.
But, is this a bug in the current script and some developer guru will discover it and fix it? Or am I just kinda screwed and should I start over?
As a side note, this 2.66 GHz P4 ran through those first 8 steps of the install like they were trivial. Much better than the AMD K6-2 333 MHz box that I'm tinkering with that sits next to it. I'm emerge-ing xFree on it right now. Talk about slow! |

Try `emerge gcc-config` and gcc-config i686-pc-linux-gnu-3.2.2 |

The emerge gcc-config seems to work fine. But then when I type Code: | gcc-config i686-pc-linux-gnu-3.2.2 | I get Code: | * /usr/bin/gcc-config: Profile does not exist! |
I tried to find out what was in that area of the disk using
and the result was amount other things Code: | i686-pc-linux-gnu-c++
i686-pc-linux-gnu-g++
i686-pc-linux-gnu-gcc |
Puzzled, I decided to try the portage merge again and no big surprise got another error. Here is the exact message : Code: | checking how to run C++ preprocessor... /lib/cpp
configure: error: C++ preprocessor "/lib/cpp" fails sanity check
!!! ERROR: sys-libs/ncurses-5.3-r1 failed.
!!! Function econf, Line 353, Exitcode 1
!!! econf failed |
To clarify, this is a P4 2.6/533 using an Asus P4PE (i845 chipset) in case that makes any difference. Though, I surely doubt it. |

What do you get when you just type 'gcc'? |

I got that I didn't supply any arguments.
By this point, I just got frustrated and decided that it was _highly_ recommended but not absolutely necessary and kept going with my install.
Of course, now it won't boot. *chuckle*
Oh well. I'm guessing I built the kernel wrong. I'll reboot using the cd and take a few steps back.
The nice thing is that this is a P4 2.6 GHz and I'm able to get through an entire stage1 install in only a few hours. |

Hi,
Obviously a big big bug....
I just deleted all my partitions...wanted to build again from stage1. After emerge sync, the bootstrap errors out with the same "sanity check" as mentioned above...
Its kinda urgent! - Im supposed to do some work on this computer tomorrow
Any ideas?

Try re-merging gcc-config. |
