Hello.
At school im working with a sempron on a VIA motherboard... but i have a problem... i dont know what type of processor it is....
Windows says nothing.... but, when running AMD cpuinfo (taken from AMD site), it says its 64 bits...

i tryed to install gentoo-2006.0 x86_64, but i never finished installing cause kernel crashes all the time....
with a x86 gentoo installation (the one i have now) if i try to select K8 in processor type in the kernel options, it never boots...

SuSE says that's a x64bits CPU....

what type of processor do i have and can i install a gentoo 64bits version?

info:

this is /proc/cpuinfo
Code:

The socket 754 Semprons originally shipped with 64-bit extensions turned off. If your machine's processor was manufactured from July 2005 onwards it's 64-bit capable, if before that it isn't.

The stepping info given in /proc/cpuinfo doesn't match AMD's stepping -- if you have a Palermo-core E6 stepping, you have 64-bit. If you have Palermo-core E3 or Paris-core, you don't. Does AMD's cpuinfo tell you the core and stepping?

Yes. This is the informations provided by CPUINFO from AMD

Quote:

Processor Name: AMD Sempron(tm) Processor 3000+
Family Model Step: 15.44.2
64bit support: yes
...

So, i think it has 64bit extensions...

my problem is, when i tried to install 64bit gentoo version, my computer was hanging all the time with kernel panics...
