...and I thought I had all my problems solved when I put ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" in my make.conf...until I made another attempt to get the forward/back buttons on my mouse working. During my initial install, I had one raging devil of a time coming up with a working xorg.conf, so I'm understandibly hesitant to mess with it now that it's working...but the MX510 HOWTOs all seem to be assuming the use of the latest version of xorg, so I bit the bullet and tried to upgrade to xorg 7.

Problem: xorg seems to be blocking itself from upgrading.

Code:

That's so many blocking packages that I'm -almost- tempted to do an emerge -u world, except it took me 2 months to get wireless working, and I'm afraid to break it again.

Problem is, I can't get evdev until I get at least xorg 7!

Try this:
Code:
emerge --unerge \<=x11-base/xorg-x11-6.9

After that, continue with updating to X.org 7

cheers

The only difference between Xorg-6.9 and Xorg-7.0 is the build process and modularity. Both use the same codebase. However, in order to install the modular version you will need to uninstall the monolithic one. I suggest looking at the gentoo wiki Modular Xorg Howto.

Now X won't load at all, it says "Fatal error: No screens found."

I've tried several backed up xorg.confs that worked with xorg 6.x, no joy.

(I'm glad I have a second computer to look stuff up on now...not so glad it means I have to browse from Windows)

I've tried several backed up xorg.confs that worked with xorg 6.x, no joy.

(I'm glad I have a second computer to look stuff up on now...not so glad it means I have to browse from Windows)
But you installed X.org 7? Did you?

Can you post the content of /var/log/Xorg.0.log

cheers

You deliberately want to read http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/desktop/x/x11/modular-x-howto.xml
I'm pretty sure that you didn't set the USE flags right so it didn't build your display and input device drivers.

Probably true, but I'm a Gentoo n00b and USE flags and stuff like that don't make any sense to me, so I have no idea what you're talking about. I'd like to RTFM, but the FM is in a big room with 8,000 other FMs that all have the exact same title, and are written in some arcane language which refers to Cthulhu a lot.

x0rg.0.log is huge...can't attach, so I'm going to try uploading it to some webspace rather than flooding the thread with text (again)

/var/log/Xorg.0.log
/etc/make.conf

Like xces mentioned. You miss some vital modules for your X.org configuration.

Could you post what kind of hardware you have? I mean what GFX card and what mouse?

cheers

I'm still failing to grok exactly what went wrong. "modules" to me sounds like something I need to emerge.

It's kind of hard to tell what hardware is relevant in this case. It's a laptop, so I know nohting about the screen. Video card is a Radeon Mobility X700 and the mouse is a Logitech MX510, though. The laptop also has one of those infernal built-in pointing devices from Hell.

I redirected my lspci and dmesg output to a text file if that helps.

EDIT: Spot on on the emerging, apparently...I can't find any ebuilds to satisfy "kbd", though, and now I've got some new error messages in Xorg.0.log...not sure if that's because of the messing around I did in xorg.conf right after emerging xorg 7, but I have to go to work, so no time to mess with it right now

Code:
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE
   (WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.
(II) Loading extension MIT-SCREEN-SAVER
(EE) Failed to load module "kbd" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) VGA(0): Driver can't support depth 24
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

Try emerging x11-misc/xkbdata. This should pull in the needed keyboard stuff.

Gah, I wish I had SSH working so I could get the error message...I tried that and it was blocked by a conflicting package...can't remember what it was, but I'm pretty sure it's something I need, so I didn't try unmerging it.

Odd thing is, when I went back to my xorg.conf from xorg 6, it was complaining that it couldn't find speedo, even though I had got around that with the xorgconfig-generated xorg.conf ><

Speedo's just a font, I wish I could tell xorg to ignore it. I don't care if everything shows up in 72-point Verdana, as long as I can get X loaded so I could fix up the remaining problems without having to continuously use Windows for browsing ><

you need to put something like this in make.conf.

INPUT_DEVICES="keyboard mouse synaptics" #
VIDEO_CARDS="radeon"

# emerge --newuse --update --ask world
This should pull in all needed packages.

then it's a good idea to make a clean config.
run
X -configure

then run
X -config /root/xorg.conf.new

If it works move it to /etc/X11

Got home, the blocked package for xkbdata wasn't important after all, so I removed it.

following zeroclip's directions now...emerge --newuse --update --ask world showed blocking packages, which I removed, but I'm not entirely sanguine about it--two of the blocked packages were coldplug and pam-login. I was under the impression that they were fairly important. When emerging Udev, the text assured me that udev now does the same thing as coldplug natively, but I don't know where pam-login's functionality has gone

Currently emerging package 3 of 400, looks like I'll find out if it worked after work.

However, I did try everything in that list -except- for the emerge world, and xorg complained that there was no radeon KERNEL module. Modprobe radeon didn't do anything, it didn't recognize it as a valid module. Hopefully something'll be pulled in with these 400 packages that'll resolve that.

A warning to anybody else with a similar problem: Do NOT follow my steps as posted in this thread!

I was attempting to do the emerge --newuse --update --ask world, and kept getting errors, since all of the sudden portage can't emerge things in the right order anymore. One of them was for libsdl. I don't know what it is, but I've seen it before and know it's important. During the build I got the following error message:

Code:

>>> checking SDL-1.2.10.tar.gz ;-)
Since you've chosen to turn off some of libsdl's functionality,
don't bother filing libsdl-related bugs until trying to remerge
libsdl without the no* flags in USE.  You need to know what
you're doing to selectively turn off parts of libsdl.

My current make.conf is here...as you can see, there is no USE flag turning off anything other than joystick support (because my laptop doesn't have a joystick port)

That's not the problem though. I was getting frustrated and decided to take a break. I turned the computer off (Not good to have a notebook on 24/7) and now I can't even log in. Gentoo prompts for a username, but never brings up the password, just asks for the username again.

I am now backing up my home directory and reinstalling from scratch.

EDIT: Cleaned up the grammar a bit.

I doubt reinstalling gentoo is the right solution for you. The time will come when you have to migrate to xorg-x11-7.x.x

Have you followed the instructions on http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/desktop/x/x11/modular-x-howto.xml?
I don't think you have. I migrated yesterday from 6.8 to the new 7.0. I didn't have had any problems. The entire process was finished after about two hours (including compile-time). I think the howto is well written and it really doesn't take a long time to follow these steps. Also you don't have to read 8,000 other Manuals. It is just one.

If you like to use gentoo I also suggest reading the howto for USE-Flags which is also just one Manual somewhere in the install guide. It will take about one hour of your time and USE-flags are one of the main parts of a gentoo-system. If you don't like to spend this time gentoo probably isn't the choice for you.

I do have to reinstall...I can't fix it if I can't get logged in.

I don't mind spending the time to get it working; it'll be worth it just to have a machine that isn't constantly bugged with spyware and other crap.

do this:

Code:

# echo "<=virtual/x11-6.9" >> /etc/portage/package.mask

Citizen Bleys, there is a step between X.org 6.9 and 7.0 -- from monolithic to modular. Just unmerge your 6.9 and emerge the 7.x. Then, possibly you also need to emerge some packages from /usr/portage/x11-drivers.
