aplay syntax

Hello,

I'm trying unsuccessfully to configure Skype via USB headset via Gnome soam going back to basics...

Having removed gnome, esound etc. from the equation I'd like to check the headset out with aplay.

But I can't work out how to tell aplay to use the non-default sound device. It appears in aplay -l, but I don't know how to address it.

If you man aplay

try aplay -D

-D = --device=NAME

like with dmix you would use

aplay -D plug:dmix *file*
