Xgl fails to open window

About a month ago an update world brought in Gnome-2.14.1 and
Xgl stopped working. This is a 32 bit system, I also have a 64 bit
System that also had problems, but I was able to get that working.
No such luck with this one.
Xgl is currently at:

[ebuild R ] x11-base/xgl-0.0.1_p20060524

The failure is as follows:

don@shuttle ~ $

Xgl comes up but does not open a window, so when you try to start compiz
on display 1, it fails saying it can't open the display and in fact there is none there.
Any ideas on what to check, the current overlay is 222 I think, but it has been upgraded
many times since this started, so it seems it must be something else in the system
causing the problem.
