I have LG_LM_50 laptop with integrated intel sound chipset.
I've been working on gentoo 2005.0, and it was ok.
And some day suddenly this problem came up:

I log on my account, fire up xmms, play some song and a window coms up with message " xmms-mad-Message: failed to open audio output: ALSA 1.2.10 output plugin".
But when i switch in preferences to "OSS driver 1.2.10" and then issue this command chmod 777 /dev/dsp /dev/mixer it's ok. But i haven't done that for 6 months and everything was ok.

But when i try that (on my account):

alsamixer - it says that - "alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device"

and when i do :

alsamixer as root, it's fine
And on root account everything is ok.
Alsa 1.2.10 output plugin works, i don't have to issue this " chmod 777 /dev/dsp /dev/mixer".

I really don't know, what's wrong. I think that my brother my have messed something up.

But the funny thing is that this everything was on 2005.0 and i couldn't take it anymore so I reinstalled the whole system to 2006.0 5 yeasterday, and from the start the same problem came up. How could this be possible that on my account it is as i described above and on root account everything works just fine.

But, the fact is that mixer in xmms doesn't work on any account. It never did.
It's not a big problem, but sometimes i'd like to increase bass and listen a little bit to those juicy basslines.
Any ideas?
Thx.

I haven't used XMMS in a long time, (amarok user), but when you say mixer, are you talking about the equalizer?

If you are winamp-style player user then I recommend looking at audacious.
