|
|
I've been trying a bunch of experimental kernels and have found none of them satisfactory. I need a kernel that:
-Has no problems with ACPI
-Has no problems with PCI Hotplug - I have an integrated SD Card reader that requires this
-Supports reiser4 - This laptop is my testing machine, so I've put on a lot of experimental stuff like this
-Supports bcm43xx - This doesn't really have to be in the kernel if it wotks as software. Like alsa, you can compile it in kernel or as separate packages. I would prefer it to be in the kernel, but it's only in the kernel for 2.6.17-rc kernels.
-Supports ati-drivers
-Supports vmware modules
For reference, I am running ~amd64.
Here are the kernels I've tried:
2.6.17-rc3-no2:
-ACPI works
-PCI Hotplug causes kernel panic on boot.
-Reiser4 works
-bcm43xx fails. Kernel panic on boot if it's in kernel, kernel oops when I access the card if it's in software.
-ati-drivers work
-vmware works
2.6.17-rc2-mm1:
-ACPI works
-PCI Hotplug works
-Reiser4 fails spectacularly. File creation/deletion errors all over the place. Fails on something as simple as untarring an archive (necessary for emerge...)
-ati-drivers work
-didn't test bcm43xx
-didn't test vmware
2.6.17-rc3-mm1 - same as -rc2:
-ACPI works
-PCI Hotplug works
-Reiser4 fails spectacularly. File creation/deletion errors all over the place. Fails on something as simple as untarring an archive (necessary for emerge...)
-ati-drivers work
-didn't test bcm43xx
-didn't test vmware
2.6.17-rc4-mm1
-ACPI has big problems
-PCI Hotplug works (well, it doesn't crash )
-Reiser4 works
-ati-drivers fail to compile its module, probably due to ACPI problems
-bcm43xx appears to work. Nothing crashes when I try it, but I haven't been able to connect. Haven't tested much due to showstopper ACPI problems elsewhere.
-vmware fails to compile its modules, probably due to ACPI problems
While it would be nice for stuff like gensplash or swsusp2 to be in the kernel, it's not necessary. If someone could point me in the direction of a reiser4-patched vanilla-sources or gentoo-sources I could probably live with bcm43xx as software.

Dream on.
For instance bcm43xx is not fully operational yet and you can have good ACPI if you'll write for your hardware good dsdt.

Woot!
2.6.16-beyond4 is the winner!
-ACPI WORKS
-No PCI Hotplug crashes
-Reiser4 WORKS
-bcm43xx software module WORKS
-ati-drivers WORK
-vmware WORKS
BONUS Suspend2 WORKS
The only problem is that the SD card reader that requires PCI Hotplug also requires the SDHCI driver which is only in 2.6.17-rcs and I'm not comfortable applying the patch to make it work with earlier kernels. I'm not complaining though!

Acer Ferrari 4005. Not many other laptops with a 64-bit processor, broadcom 4318 wireless, and SDHCI card reader Good guess though; that laptop's hardware is very similar. |
