I did a fresh install of gentoo, booted into it and compiled xorg and gnome, along with a few other things like the nvida drivers. I then rebooted, and now when I type anything into the login prompt it hangs, and then comes back to the prompt.
For instance, I type root and press enter. Instead of prompting me for a password, it stalls for several seconds and goes back to the initial login screen.
Any thoughts or suggestions? I'm able to ssh in to make changes to the system, but from the actual computer I can do nothing at this point.

I would ssh in and re-emerge pam and shadow. Make sure to do the etc-updates too. That is all I can think of at least.

Done. Thank you so very much. That's a weight off my shoulders. |

I have seen others have that problem, had something similiar myself, and that fixed it. I just wonder why it happens to begin with.
