|

Hi,
I'm planning on buying a new pc (AMD X2 + nvidia) but i'm worried about the infamous X.org crashes that trouble a lot of linux users. I can't decide what mobo i will get :
DFI LP NF4 SLI-DR
some ASUS board...
Asrock 939SLI32-eSATAII
I read about the NF4 chipset that only a few MOBO's work perfectly. Most people complain about unstable network and things like that. On top of that, i read that the quality of asus boards in not what it should be, resulting in overheated chipsets which probably cause X.org to crash. Only DFI seems to get everything working correctly, but that board is 3 times the price of a budget board.
asrock on the other hand seems very good (except for sound). Very stable and very cheap. Also has a lot of features...
Nobody seems to know the real problem with the X.org crashes. It could be heat... but i have the same problem on my dual PIII with a pci nvidia card right now and it depends on what kernel version and X.org version i run. That makes me thing that heat is not the only problem...
Also, i would like my system to run 24/7, i don't want to boot every day. Is a budget board like the asrock a good choice for this?
Is there a Mobo - CPU - GPU that is garanteed to work stable? If not, what are my chances of buying a stable system? If you have a stable system, what parts did you use? |

I can only speak from my own experience and my Shuttle FN95v3 works really well under GNU/Linux using an X2 4400+ CPU. This is nForce3 based though. |

Asus A8N-E (nForce4)
Athlon64 X2 4200+
Club 3D Geforce 6600 GT (128MB pci-e)
Bought a few months ago and is running really well. I don't remember having any random Xorg crashes with these components. |

ASUS boards are fine, except SOME (not all) people have problems with the northbridge fan on models with them. If you're worried about that, get one of the passively cooled SLI versions. |

ASUS A8N-SLI (nForce4)
PSU ASUS | A-50GA 500W RT
AMD X2 3800+
NVIDIA XFX|GF6800XT 256M PCI-E
I've only had it for a week, but oh how I've abused it during that week. I have yet to experience any problems. _________________ Obligatory hompage link. |

remember, the only people that post are the ones with problems. All the people that are running great, have no reason to visit the forum and just post saying that everything went well. In general the Nforce 4 chipset is very well supported, and most people have few if any problems.
I have a 3800+ x2 with a 6600GT board, and haven't had the first hiccup yet, no crashes of any sort. Don't let potential problems scare you away from something.
If you plan on leaving it on 24/7, I would look for a mobo with a passive chipset cooler, rather than a fan. |

Mine's fine. I've never even heard of these infamous crashes - should I be worried? _________________ What are you, stupid? |

Helpful hint; forget nVidia and get a Matrox card. They're nice, and the drivers are guanteed to work; they're Free Software. Spend the extra money on a second screen (many matrox cards support more than one). Trust me, you'll have a far better experience. |

I ordered a ASUS A8N-SLI PREMIUM and a ASUS 6600GT. I'm waiting for it to arrive. I hope i'll be able to vote yes on my own poll |
