Thanks flameeyes but I just tried again to be sure. If someone else is having this problem the bug is (apparently) detailed here https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=81066
-----------------------------------------------------
I believe my problem was caused my the Samsung version of libqt-mt sitting in my /usr/lib, and the symlinks that I set up so the printer could find qt. I had dismissed the possibility of this being the problem because I had uneventfully upgraded qt and some kde apps since installing the printer, but removing the file and links allowed me to compile kdebase-meta.

OK, I deleted the kde.eclass from the (perrty, I think) overlay and added the suse dynsort patch to the binutils ebuild from flameeyes' overlay. I re-emerged most dependancies, including qt, and then kdelibs and kicker emerged fine with hidden visibility and --as-needed. I'm now emerging/updating the rest of kde 3.5.3. So far, so good.

I have to correct this a little. After a new sync I made a simple "emerge -a =kde-3.5.3" and all went fine over night. The packages I had already emerged had to be removed cause they where
blocking. But know I have all the stuff - uugh!

Chaps,
I had the same issue, I tried most of the suggested ideas over the course of 2 days, none worked for me. Looking at the first entry in emerge.log I realised that the install on my ThinkPad was nearly 2 years old, so I bit the bullet and wiped the hard disk.

The install was smooth, upgraded to gcc 4.1.1 and expat 2.0 as soon as I could, backfixed libexpat.so.0 and continued to install KDE 3.5.3, which went without a hitch with hidden visibilty.

It feels so much faster, I'm sure most of this is because of the fresh install, I also mounted a 2G usb flash drive at /usr/portage/distfiles to try and make sure that reiserfs would have the opportunity to place most of the new system/xorg/kde files close to each other at the beginning of the disk, I'm not quite sure if this made a difference but it felt good :-)

So, if you hit a brick wall with this problem try staring from scratch.

(I also swapped -Os for -O3 and took off tree-vectorize from my CFLAGS)

I discoverd that my errors where due to a broken ram module. :(
Now everything compiles fine again. :)

Flameeyes: thanks for all the great work on kde 3.5.3! You are now a Gentoo dev and a PR expert it seems to me, wandering through this thread all day :wink:

Has anyone gotten the new Cups v1.2.1 to work with the KDE Printer Manager in the Control Center? If so, how? Supposedly this version of KDE has patches added to fix the Cups backend issues with 1.2.

Cheers

If you are using pertty, make sure kdelibs is compiled with the patches. It may not be.

The pertty patches? Yeah. I am using those. But, when I read the changelog for kde 3.5.3, they said that the issues with directly linking to the cups private functions has been fixed so it should work with cups 1.2.1 out of the box, right?

That's not a good idea, since you won't get revision bumps and it doesn't include packages that didn't change from 3.5.{1,2} to 3.5.3. Either use ~kde-base/foo-3.5.3 or better <=kde-base/foo-3.5.3-r99.

Look at the 3.5.3 ebuild in portage. It has a patchset for cups.

this is from the 3.5.3 and 3.5.3-r1 ebuild:

Code:

src_unpack() {
    kde_src_unpack
    if use legacyssl ; then
        # This patch won't be included upstream, see bug #128922
        epatch ${FILESDIR}/kdelibs-3.5.2-kssl-3des.patch || die "Patch did not a
pply."
    fi

    if use cups && has_version '>=net-print/cups-1.2_pre'; then
        cd "${S}"

        EPATCH_EXCLUDE="kubuntu_39_cups12_compile_fixes.diff" \
        EPATCH_SUFFIX="diff" \
        EPATCH_MULTI_MSG="Applying KUbuntu patches for CUPS 1.2 support ..." \
        EPATCH_FORCE="yes" \
        epatch "${WORKDIR}/kdeprint-3.5.2-cups-1.2-patches/"
    fi
}

You need this section. I believe the perrty patch never used the portage ebuild, but rather the 3.5.2 ebuild renamed. :)

Hope this helps.

Hmmm. When I made the patches I used the portage ebuilds. This is a snipplet from the ebuild I used:
Code:
src_unpack() {
   kde_src_unpack
   if use legacyssl ; then
      # This patch won't be included upstream, see bug #128922
      epatch ${FILESDIR}/kdelibs-3.5.2-kssl-3des.patch || die "Patch did not apply."
   fi

   if use cups && has_version '>=net-print/cups-1.2_pre'; then
      cd "${S}"

      EPATCH_EXCLUDE="kubuntu_39_cups12_compile_fixes.diff" \
      EPATCH_SUFFIX="diff" \
      EPATCH_MULTI_MSG="Applying KUbuntu patches for CUPS 1.2 support ..." \
      EPATCH_FORCE="yes" \
      epatch "${WORKDIR}/kdeprint-3.5.2-cups-1.2-patches/"
   fi
}
So, I do have that code. :S I even did a fresh install just days ago because I felt like it. :P I started from stage 1 and so it was a fresh system. I installed cups 1.2.1 then I installed kdelibs, but when I opened the Control Center to configure cups, it came up with an error stated that it could not locate cups and cupsd was started. I had to downgrad to a previous version, started it and it works fine. I didn't even recompile kdelibs and it works. :S I have the cups use flag set and 1.2.1 was installed, so that logic suggests that the patches should have been installed.

CHeck to output to see of the cups patches are in fact being applied. It may be the >= line in the conditional patch failing.

If the output shows the patch is not being applied, then try modding the ebuild to say if >= 1.2.0 cups version rather than the >= 1.2_pre. COuld be some flawed logic... dunno.

Well, I will recompile this and see if that helps any. I will report back when it's done compiling.

Maybe there is just something wrong with the patches?

Cheers.

Thanks for your suggestions but cups just bombed out on me. :( Even after rebuilding. I use HPLIP, so there may still be some issues there. I dunno. But I could not add a printer at all. It erred out with:
Unable to load the requested drive: ... location of driver ... Parser stack overflow

I could not even add a printer with the web interface, so I guess it doesn't like the driver files that come with HPLIP in the HPIJS package. I was even talking with genstef on IRC about it.

Cheers.
