i know to do this:
cd /usr/src/linux
make menuconfig
then pops up menuconfig options
then do i do:
make dep && make clean bzImage modules modules_install
cp /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot
Note: bzImage is what the image name is like vmlinux.2.4.20? _________________ dj_goku | www.tektronic.org |

There is a few packages you need to remerge afterwards, too.
My kernel routine
cd /usr/src/linux &&
cp .config .. &&
make mrproper &&
cp ../.config . &&
make menuconfig
make -j4 dep &&
make -j4 bzImage modules &&
make modules_install &&
mount /boot && mv /boot/bzImage /boot/bzImage.old &&
cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot && umount /boot &&
emerge alsa-driver lm_sensors && echo "DONE :p" _________________ [Server etc. | C2D 2.2 @ 3.0 GHz / 4 GB RAM / 3x1 TB + 1x2 TB SATA disks + 1.5 TB ext. | Gentoo]

"Note: bzImage is what the image name is like vmlinux.2.4.20?"
"cp /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot "
What if you just actually use bzImage instead of vmlinux2.4.20?
in lilo my file reads image=/boot/bzImage and everything works fine. |

when compiling the kernel, the line reading Code: | make clean bzImage modules modules_install | is doing a number of things. Make is taking, in the case, four arguments. You should look at /usr/src/linux/README for more details, but by passing the bzImage argurment, you are creating a compressed kernel image called bzImage. Hope this answers your question.
