So, late last night I began to update my computer with the usual emerge --sync && emerge -NuD world.

There was a conflicting package named "pam_login"-something, so I delled it.
Portage is usually such a nice tool, so I didn't even think twice about it.

Now comes the funny thing.

My computer crashed not soon after the emerge -C "pam_login".

Now I can't login to my computer.
I had ssh up and running on it, but my network isn't starting up automagically during startup.

So.. I can't reach my computer through the net, and I can't login with my keyboard.

Is there any way to install a package on my system *without* logging in?
I tried to boot that minimal install disc, but I couldn't figure out how to install packages on my system..

Anybody know how to resolve this?

Thanks.

You will need to startup a bootable disk (minimal install disk will do), mount the required drives and chroot into your system. Once there, emerge shadow.
