My problem is simple: I can type "`", but I can't type characters like "è", "é" or "à". Furthermore, I've just noticed that I can't type the "forward" "`", only "¸" (by pressing ALT and "`").

Do you know how to type those characters?

Try using keyboard layout variants, e.g.
Code:
setxkbmap -model pc105 -layout de -variant deadgraveacute

or use the keyboard layout configuration tool in Gnome or KDE. Some keys then "preload" the accent and add it to the character typed afterwards.

Thanks, that worked like a charm!

To make the setting permanent, I set the value of XkbVariant in /etc/X11/xorg.conf to "deadgraveacute".
