|
|
I'm trying to install Gentoo PPC 64 (2006.0) on a dual core G5 PowerMac. However, shortly after the kernel boots and the RamDisk loads, I get a screen that is mostly white, with a few black lines, and the following text in white:
CF000100
MM Init
CF000100
MM Init Done
CF000012
Setup Arch
And it seems to hang there. After being stuck there for 30 seconds or so, the fans will spin up to full speed. But that's all that happens.
Can anyone give me any ideas on what's going on?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi,
Thank you. That CD seems to be working. But now I have another problem. It tries to use an unsuported video mode. (According to my monitor, the refresh rate it is getting is ridiculously high. 154 Hz I think it was).
So I rebooted, and tried using the video=ofonly option at the boot prompt as suggested by the handbook:
boot: video=ofonly
Please wait, loading kernel...
cd:2, video=ofonly: Unknown or corrupt file system
Thanks again for the help |

You need to name the kernel (ppc64? I'm not sure what it is on those CDs) then the boot paramters. For instance, with the ppc32 CD, you would type (at the boot: prompt)
boot: ppc32 video=ofonly _________________ Gentoo PPC FAQ: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-ppc-faq.xml |

Ah. Thank you. It's booting now.
And the thermal support seems to be working as well. My fans aren't spinning up like vacume cleaners like they were when I tried installing ones that didn't have the thermal support for the dual cores yet. |
