2 problems, and I just need a way around one:

For genkernel, it says it needs the kernel config file to use as a basis for kernel config. In Knoppix, I cann't find such a file.

With the install CD, on boot, it hangs on /proc, /dev, or gpm when booting and I have to hard-boot out to restart.

I don't know what kind of info you need for this, but if you need anymore, please just ask. Right now I'm in Knoppix, and would like either answer if at all possible. Thanks

Where have you searched for the config file?

Have you tried /boot/config<whatever version> in knoppix, or the gentoo boot cd?

System.map coffee.bmp debian.bmp sarge.bmp vmlinuz
System.map-2.6.12 config-2.6.12 debianlilo.bmp sid.bmp vmlinuz-2.6.12

That is the contents of /boot. I'm up the the genkernel portion, and I'm still looking for the option for it. I'm going to put the install cd into my DVD drive and see if I can get it from there. Wish me luck

EDIT:

An idea: add into the portage tree a genkernal-min_install_config to use so that one doesn't have to go through thiese kinds of problems.

P.S. I'm using Knoppix 4.0 (or 4.1, whichever is the new version), and hence that may be whey everything is turning out so difficult to find

Hi Dralnu.

Do you have a /proc/config.gz file? If so, do the following:
Code:
cd /usr/src/linux
cat /proc/config.gz | gunzip > config

I don't see it in Knoppix.

I've tried to manually configure my kernal, and for the mostpart it worked, but I never got my network to work right. THATS my main problem here. I used the lspci command or whatever it is, and thought I had support for my ethernet card compiled in, but still ran into problems (mostly, I had a series of errors that wouldn't even let me use emege). Sinc neither the minimum install CD has /proc/config.gz, and neither does Knoppix (I fugre they removed the config file after compile to reduce the size of the distro), I'm at a loss, unless someone knows how to get around all this.

If you have problems with your nic, post the output of the following:
Code:
lspci | grep -i net

if your nic works under knoppix, its possible to make it work under gentoo. period.
you never followed up on your own thread concerning getting your connection up and running - hard to expect youll solve problems that way.

0000:01:03.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10)

Thats the output for lspci | grep -i net

As for vesselin's reply, I've had other things to deal with, and I know it should work. This is my first kernel install, so I'm trying to learn something here, so excuse me if I'm a bit preoccupied with things other then making sure I complete every little thread I start.

On a lighter note, I'm going to just start to configure my kernel manually. I'm not sure what alot of my hardware needs drivers, since alot of it is First International, and seems somewhat old, but I know it will work under 2.6.x, since when I updated SuSe when it was installed to use the 2.6 kernel, it all worked swimmingly.

device drivers->network device support->ethernet (10 or 100 Mbit)->realtek rtl-8129/8130/8130/8139 pci fast ethernet adapter support

thats all I've gotten from lspci. I have pretty much all but:

0000:00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corp. 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 01)

configured, and them I cann't find anywhere for one reason or another. I'm looking into the multimedia audio controller right now, but the other two I'm at a loss of finding. I know this may seem stupid to some, but some of the configuration options dealing with this are still forgein to me and might as well be written in sandskrit.

Oh well, only one path out of newbie-ness...

think I found the Multimedia driver labeled as

ac97

instead of more similar name. Hope it works...
