i have two gentoo laptops (not identical at all). i want to enable the standby key on one of them, but i can't figure out the scancode of that key.

when i push keys on one laptop dmesg gives an atkbd line telling me the scancode but on the other laptop no such line comes out with dmesg. do i have to run a program or enable something in the kernel for dmesg. i have CONFIG_KEYBOARD_ATKBD enabled in both kernels.

BUMP.

I really don't get it. why is atkbd not outputting anything on dmesg? really really weird. what does atkbd depend on?

You might want to check and see if it is detected as an ACPI button rather than a keyboard button. If you are already running ACPI/acpid then you should be able to check using acpi_listen (the command line tool).
