|
|
hi, i have this gentoo box running on my laptop...here is how i deligate my harddisk:
/dev/sda1 WinXP 30GB NTFS
/dev/sda2 Data 30GB NTFS
/dev/sda3 Backup 10GB FAT32 (Shared partition to store Linux n Windows stuff)
/dev/sda4 ??? 30MB ???? (this is my laptop's preinstalled partition to store the boot up MediaPlayer function)
/dev/sda5 /boot 100MB ext2
/dev/sda6 /swap 512MB swap
/dev/sda7 / 9 GB ext3
hm.....so far, i still left 40% disk space in my /root, i am planning to install kde-meta, apache2, php, mysql, gimp, oracle very soon.
Do you all think my disk space is sufficient for that? (i heard that if i finish installed all the things i need, the usage of the partition won't grow anymore...is it?) If i want to resize my partition without any lose to my data, is it possible?
if yes, how do i resize my /root partition by taking 5GB from /dev/sda2 (Data) partition ???

Messing around with partitions is always tricky. They say to backup all data before attempting such a thing. And they are right.
9 GB seems rightly enough for the installation you describe. So that shouldn't be a problem. But growing your rootfs is, in my opinion not the right way to go.
For instance, you have an Oracle database that you want to install. That's not really a core piece of your system, so it shouldn't be in root. Rather it should be on it's own (virtual) partition. If you are into resizing partitions often, you might want to take a look at LVM. _________________ Code, justify, code - Pitr Dubovich |

well, if i am going to create 1 more partition just for oracle, do you think i still need to expand my root? or do u think it is ok to store oracle in my 'backup' partition which is fat32? |

Do not install/store it to Fat partition, cause there it could be f***ed up by some vista from your other os
V=viruses
I=infections
S=spyware
T=trojans
A=adware

Check out http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/LVM-HOWTO/ for info on LVM.
Don't store Oracle on FAT32, it's just a not a good system for that.
Just make a Volume Group for it. The thing is, with LVM, you can do not need to create an extra partition. _________________ Code, justify, code - Pitr Dubovich |
