I have added numlock to startup by rc-update add numlock default. So, my numlock is on in ttys.
The problem is, it is off by default in X! If I press ctrl+alt+f1, it is on; If I press ctrl+alt+f7, it is off.
How to get numlock on in X by default? |

emerge numlockx
If you use gdm or kdm they should use it automatically(you may need to change a settiing). Otherwise read the README for setup instructions. |

I emerged numlockx, and added numlockx to both /etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0 and /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc
Now, if I use startx, the numlock gets on. But if I use rc-update add xdm default, the numlock blinks once and goes down.
What could be the problem? |

Got it working, kind of. Added numlock on in /usr/kde/3.3/share/config/kdm/Xstarup and /usr/kde/3.3/share/config/kdm/Xsession
Now numlock gets on after I login. |

For your kde session there's a setting under Peripherals->Keyboard in control center that allows you to select numlock status on startup. I was thinking there was something similar for kdm but I can't find it now. |

Can you give a more detailed explaination of setting this up, and for window managers other than KDE? |

According to readme, you have to edit /etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0 and /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc. But then, it only works if you are using startx (that is, no display manager - xdm, kdm, gdm)
Now I use kdm, so I edited /usr/kde/3.3/share/config/kdm/Xstarup and /usr/kde/3.3/share/config/kdm/Xsession . This now works for kdm. I later found what PowerFactor said (Peripherals>keyboard in kde control center etc.)
So, I dont know other display managers. But for kdm+(kde, wmaker, icebox); it is working. |

i've managed to get this working with gdm by doing the following.
and added "/usr/X11R6/bin/numlockx" to the line before the last line in "/etx/X11/gdm/Init/Default" |
